Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region (Habitat PKR) has been generously awarded a $10,000 donation from 100 Women Peterborough to support the construction of Our Daughter’s Home, a groundbreaking supportive housing project for seven women with developmental disabilities in East City, Peterborough.
Habitat PKR was one of three local charities invited to present at the organization’s recent giving event, alongside One City Peterborough and Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation. Following presentations from all three organizations, the members of 100 Women Peterborough voted to award the collective donation to Habitat PKR.
100 Women Peterborough brings together 100 local women who each contribute $100, creating a $10,000 gift that is awarded to a local charitable organization. The group meets four times each year, directing significant funding to initiatives that create meaningful impact throughout the community.
During Habitat PKR’s presentation, General Operations Manager Natalie Raponi shared the story behind Our Daughter’s Home—a partnership between Habitat PKR and the grassroot charity Our Daughter’s Home. The project will create a permanent, purpose-built home on Sophia Street in Peterborough for seven women with developmental disabilities whose families have spent years navigating a critically overwhelmed supportive housing system.
The presentation highlighted the reality facing thousands of families across Ontario, where more than 28,000 people are currently waiting for supportive housing placements. For many families, the uncertainty of who will care for their loved ones in the future remains a constant concern.
The $10,000 gift from 100 Women Peterborough will help fund a commercial-grade sprinkler system required for the home to meet specialized residential care standards. These enhanced safety features, including sprinkler systems, commercial fire alarms, emergency lighting, and other life-safety measures, are essential to ensuring the residents can live safely and independently for decades to come.
“The support of 100 Women Peterborough brings us one step closer to opening the doors of Our Daughter’s Home,” said Rappni. “This project is about creating permanence, dignity, safety, and belonging for seven women who deserve a place to call home in the community they know and love.”
Construction preparations for the project are underway, with Habitat PKR and Our Daughter’s Home continuing to raise funds to cover the additional specialized construction costs required for the development.
