At Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region, we believe that a home is so much more than just a place to live. Home is safety, stability, belonging, and a foundation for the future. That’s why we are proud to help bring the Meaning of Home Contest to classrooms and families across our region once again.
For two decades, students across Canada have shared what home means to them through stories, poems and words from the heart, while helping make a difference for families in their communities.
And in January, the next chapter begins!
The 20th Meaning of Home Contest kicks off January 4, 2027, and we’re inviting students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 across Peterborough County, Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands to share what “home” means to them.
It’s free to enter! Students simply write a poem or short story about home, and for every entry, $10 is donated to Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region to help build safe, decent and affordable homes for local families.
No fundraising. No donations to collect. Just young voices making a real impact in their community.
Teachers, parents and students: start thinking about what home means to you and get ready to enter in January!
Although the contest is national, the impact is local. Every entry from a student within Peterborough or the Kawarthas, including Lindsay, Bridgenorth, Haliburton and more, results in a $10 donation that supports our Habitat builds – creating more affordable homes for families right here in our community.
Please share this post with a teacher, parent or student who might want to take part!
