Celebrating Earth Day 2024 with Action
Today marks Earth Day, a time to honour our planet and take meaningful action to protect it! Today and every day, we at Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region want to embrace sustainable practices, to protect the environment that sustains us. Here is what we have been up to in honour of Earth Day, 2024.
Habitat ReStores
At Habitat PKR, we are committed to reducing waste and promoting sustainability all year long through our Habitat ReStores, where we accept and resell new and gently used items, diverting them from landfills. In 2023 alone, we diverted over 331,730 items from landfill – a whopping 13% increase from the previous year. Partnering with us at the Habitat ReStore allows you to play a pivotal role in waste reduction. Whether you’re donating your unwanted items to your local ReStore Donation Centre, or purchasing second-hand items for your home, by collaborating with us, you are doing your part for our planet!
Earth Day Clean-Up
Our commitment to environmental stewardship also extends to hands-on initiatives – on Monday, April 22, our staff participated in an Earth Day clean-up across all of our properties. They spent the morning rolling up their sleeves to litter pick, ensuring our spaces remain clean and safe for our ReStore customers, donors, volunteers, and the environment.
The Big Flip
Finally, in the spirit of fostering creativity and sustainability, there’s still time to enter ‘The Big Flip’ – an opportunity for individuals across the Peterborough-Kawartha Region to showcase their talent in furniture flipping! Partnering with Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre, enter this contest and you could win a $500 Gift Card to Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre, a Fusion Minerals Paint Prize Pack and an Annual Membership to the Peterborough Tool Library! All you have to do is find a pre-loved piece of furniture (the best place to start is the Habitat ReStore!), snap a photo with your piece of furniture to capture the ‘before’ glory, creatively flip your piece, document the process with another photo, and finally, enter the contest before April 30th by uploading your progress photos and finished masterpiece online. It’s free to enter and is open to all ages!
