Fraserville Family Becomes Habitat PKR’s 100th Homeowner Family!

Posted: 12-Jan-2026

Today, Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region (Habitat PKR) celebrated a milestone: welcoming Kayla, Jimmy, and their three children into their newly built four-bedroom home in Fraserville – the 100th family to achieve affordable homeownership through Habitat PKR.

This home represents more than a dream come true for the family. It is a lasting legacy of generosity: the former Bailieboro-Springville United Church sold their buildings in 2012 and donated $100,000 to make the build possible, while congregation members Don and Pat Wood donated the land.

Built with universal design principles and energy-efficient features, the home reduces utility costs and provides a safe, comfortable living space, reflecting Habitat PKR’s commitment to affordable, sustainable housing. Local business Lifestyle Home Products donated the windows and doors, ensuring quality materials for the build.

Volunteers from the former churches – now part of Harmony United Church – and Centerville Presbyterian Church helped bring the home to life, with some in their late 70s and 80s working side by side with Habitat trades staff. “This build is about creating a lasting legacy and extending our faith into the community,” said Robin Maughan, a congregation member.

Homeowner Jimmy shared his gratitude:
“Owning a home once felt out of reach for our family, but thanks to Habitat PKR, the church, and the Fraserville community, we now have the space to build a better future. Our kids finally have rooms to call their own and a loving village to grow up in. We are proud to call Fraserville our home.”

The ceremony welcomed friends, family, volunteers, construction partners, neighbours, and local officials, including Peterborough County Warden Bonnie Clark, Otonabee South Monaghan Mayor Joe Taylor, and Rev. Neil Ellis of Centreville Harmony Church.

Hope Lee, Board Chair of Habitat PKR, reflected on the significance of the milestone:
“Welcoming our 100th family into a Habitat home is an incredible achievement. This milestone shows what can happen when community members come together to support one another. Kayla, Jimmy, and their children now have a safe, affordable place to thrive, and their home stands as a testament to the power of community.”

Through Habitat PKR’s program, Kayla and Jimmy purchased their home with no down payment and a mortgage geared to their income, making homeownership achievable for their working family. Homes remain permanently affordable, allowing the program to serve new families in need.

Through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy, the Government of Canada has made a total funding commitment of $4.75 million towards Habitat Peterborough & Kawartha Region projects, including this home. Since 2019, the Government of Canada has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Canada to build more than 800 homes across the country through a $65.1 million national investment through its Affordable Housing Fund, empowering more families to achieve safe, affordable housing.

Emma Harrison, Member of Parliament for Peterborough, shared the following statement: “This build is an amazing example that housing is more than a roof. It’s footing in a community, and a promise that no one stands alone. It’s a place where people find safety, stability and a sense of belonging. The investments in this new home will make a real impact on the lives of this family and neighbourhood in Fraserville.”

The 100th Habitat PKR home is a reminder of what can happen when faith, community, and generosity come together to address the region’s growing need for affordable housing.
