Posted: 24-Jul-2024

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region (Habitat PKR) proudly celebrated the grand opening of the new Lakefield ReStore, located at 3001 Lakefield Road, Selwyn. The event, which took place on July 24, marked a significant milestone in Habitat PKR’s mission to support local families and individuals through affordable homeownership.

The celebration began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Habitat PKR representatives, local officials, community members and local businesses. The event featured food, music, and an opportunity for attendees to explore and shop at the new ReStore, which offers a variety of quality new and gently used building materials, furniture, appliances, and home décor items.

The event featured speeches from several notable figures, including Sherry Senis, Mayor of Selwyn Township; Michelle Ferreri, MP Peterborough-Kawartha; Susan Zambonin, CEO of Habitat PKR; and Karen Coviello, Vice President of Affiliate Success, Habitat for Humanity Canada. Holly O’Connor, Communications & Marketing Manager for Habitat PKR, served as the emcee.

Mayor Sherry Senis celebrated the new ReStore, saying, “With Selwyn as the new home for ReStore, it will provide community members both locally and across the County with an opportunity to reduce waste through donating and finding treasures that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill.”

In her speech, Susan Zambonin highlighted the vital role of Habitat ReStores in supporting the organization’s mission:

By covering all our operational costs with crucial surplus, ReStores allow every donated dollar to go directly to our build projects, ensuring that every penny is used where it is needed most – to champion the need in our community for a safe and affordable place to live.

Zambonin also emphasized the impact of Habitat PKR’s recent developments, including Leahy’s Lane Phase 1 and Leahy’s Lane Phase 2 which will provide 53 local families and individuals the opportunity to become homeowners. She noted that the Lakefield ReStore will enable Habitat PKR to expand their building efforts, especially during a time when more families are seeking affordable housing.

The success of the Lakefield ReStore is made possible by the continued support of the Selwyn Township, Habitat for Humanity Canada, and the local community of ReStore shoppers, donors, and volunteers. Susan Zambonin shared:

More lives will be transformed through the Lakefield ReStore, helping families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable housing

The Lakefield ReStore will be open six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, providing an accessible location for shopping, donating, and volunteering. Habitat PKR invites the community to visit the new ReStore and join them in their mission to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
