Mervyn Wins Volunteer of the Year at the LDCC Excellence Awards

Posted: 07-May-2024

Congratulations to Lindsay ReStore’s Volunteer, Mervyn, for being awarded Volunteer of the Year at the 2023 Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards. Over a year ago when Mervyn first expressed interest in volunteering, we anticipated a quiet gentleman dedicating a few hours each week. Little did we know the profound impact he would have on the Lindsay ReStore.

Mervyn began in the backroom, diligently processing housewares. His efforts were immediately noticeable – new products displayed, merchandise standards elevated, and customers appreciated the refreshed housewares section. Mervyn swiftly became a customer favourite, known by name to many. Among associates and fellow volunteers, he was an instant standout.

What truly sets Mervyn apart is his unwavering commitment. When challenges arose, he stepped up without hesitation, inspiring others to follow suit. What started as a couple of hours of volunteering has grown into 20-plus hours almost every week. By any definition, Mervyn epitomizes the essence of volunteering.

His tireless work ethic, coupled with a kind heart, serves as an inspiration to us all. Mervyn seeks no recognition; his motivation lies solely in selfless dedication to the ReStore and the Lindsay community.

All of us at Habitat PKR wholeheartedly believe that there is no one more deserving of this recognition. Thank you Mervyn for your invaluable contributions and thank you LDCC, for recognizing the impact volunteers have on our community!

Without volunteers we would see many vital community initiatives end. Volunteers are the unsung hero’s and backbone of many organizations, charitable groups and non-profits. That is why when the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce did our awards this year, we added the category of Volunteer of the Year. Mervyn Hamill was the winner this year and true to his volunteering nature, he was unable to attend the awards to receive his trophy because he was busy looking after someone in need. We got the trophy to him but it was my absolute pleasure to finally meet him in person and at least present to him a scroll of appreciation and congratulation from both Jamie Schmale, MP and MPP Laurie Scott. Mervyn, who volunteers for Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region is very worthy of the recognition. Thank you Mervyn for all you do to make our community all the better.
